Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM JOHN (JOHN AP EVAN, IEVAN KNOWN AS EVAN ROBERT LEWIS) was born about 1660 in Llanvachreth, Merionethshire, Wales, and died Bef. November 01, 1712 in Of Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co. PA. He married November 08, 1681 (Llanfor parish records) JANE HUGH, daughter of HUGH CADWALADER and GWEN WILLIAMS. She was born 1651 in Yspytty, Evan, Denbighshire, Wales, and died Abt. 1740 in Of Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co. PA.

H. M. Jenkins (1897) p. 449: His parentage is attributed to John ap Evan of Penmaen son of Evan Robert Lewis of Fron Goch Wales.
JQ: This is undoubtedly correct. His uncle Cadwalader ab Evan of Coed y Foel, Llanfor in his will dated Dec. 1688 and proved - left a legacy to his brother John Evan, his nephew - William John Evan (or William John ) - £5 . Upon condition that his father in law Hugh Cadwaladr shall also give him £5 otherwise the money to be distributed by executors. (Elfed Owen)

His mother was named Margaret and she was a Quaker, fined from time to time in Wales for attending Quaker meetings. William John was baptized at Llanfor 10 August 1673, he being then several years old. The ceremony had evidently been delayed owing to the disagreement of his parents on the question of religion. - T.A. Glenn (WFP, p. 104). He had some older half siblings who came to Pennsylvania named Griffith John (of Merion, emigrated 1690), Robert John (of Abington), and Margaret John wife of David Evans (she died on the ship Robert and Elizabeth on the voyage to Pennsylvania in 1698).

Along with Thomas ap Evan, he came to Pennsylvania in 1697 to pick out new land for Welsh settlers and chose the area of present Lower and Upper Gwynedd and Montgomery townships in present Montgomery Co. PA (then Philadelphia Co.). The deciding factors of their selection are presumed to have been, fertility of the land, price and availability of a large undivided tract (they were the vanguard of the larger group of Welsh settlers that arrived the next year). John and Evan received title for the land from Robert Turner (who had acquired it from John Gee and others) in 1698. When the other settlers came over, John and Evan gave them deeds for the subsections (1699). He retained title for about 1900 acres (actually 2866 by resurvey in 1702) in the upper end of today's Upper Gwynedd township. Today's West Point Pike/Church Rd. is approximately the boundary of his land (the other boundaries are the township lines). The adjacent tract to today's Swedesford Rd. was owned by Thomas Evans. The area to the northwest in Towamencin twp. would have been occupied by Edward Morgan. He also had a tract of 322 acres in today's Lower Gwynedd township adjacent to Whitpain township between the land owned by Edward Foulke and John Hugh (his brother-in-laws).

At the time of settlement, Gwynedd township was wooded upland (hardwood forest) with few Indians and a few neighbors in today's Horsham and Upper Dublin townships. The Whitpain family had also settled in neighboring Whitpain township in 1685. The main company of immigrants sailed from Liverpool on 18 Apr 1698 on the ship 'Robert and Elizabeth'. Forty five died on the voyage to Pennsylvania from dysentery. By November they had cleared land and built homes in Gwynedd.

Howard Jenkins:

Some idea of the agricultural methods of the early settlers may be gathered from the inventories of personal property attached to their wills. In 1712, William John's inventory showed his grain crops to be wheat, rye, and oats; he also had hay; and these were "in the barn," showing that he, at least, had by that time built a barn. He had 21 cattle of all sorts, 5 of the horse kind, in addition to "1 old mare with her breed in the woods." He had "7 stock of bees," showing attention already given to them, and Jenkin Jenkin's inventory, 1745, includes 18 hives of bees. Owen Evans, 1723, also had bees, and his inventory includes "6 acres of new land fallow for barley."

Howard Jenkins:

We may study with interest, in this connection, the inventory of the household goods of William John, of Gwynedd, who died in 1712, in the early years of the settlement. He was, judging by the large tract which he bought, --nearly three times the size of any other, --a rich man according to the circumstances of the times. The inventory in the house includes the following articles: 1 Rugg, 4 new blankets, 7 new blanketts and one old Double coverlid, 2 ditto, 1 ditto, 2 single ditto, 3 ditto, 1 double ditto, 3 tow double coverlids, 7 cushin cases, 1 side of curtains, 7 pairs sheets, 5 table cloths, 10 napkins, 4 bolster cases and 2 pillow cases, 8 chairs, 2 tables, 2 Dutch wheels, and 2 other spinning wheels, 6 lbs. Of hatcheled flax, 6 of flaxen yarn, 37 of course tow yarn, 4 of woolen yarn, 28 of wool, 40 yards of linen, 2 buck-skins (appraised at 7s. 6d); 55 lbs. Of hemp, chafing dish, brass pans, wooden ware, pewter, 3 meal sives, earthen ware.

Abraham Musgrave, son of Thomas, late of Halifax, in Yorkshire, Great Britain, yeoman, dec'd; and Gainor Jones, dau. of William, late of Gwynnedd, dec'd, at Gwynnedd Meeting House. Wit: William Musgrave, Jon. Cockshaw, and Anna Jones. (I believe the name "John Christian" is due to an error in Copying. I think it should be " Jon. or Jonathan Cockshaw," who was an uncle of Abraham Musgrave.) Correct. * (* In the list of witnesses another name had obviously been erased and the name of Jon. Cockshaw entered. Following the word 'correct', the following was scrstched out apparently by the author "The Abraham Musgrave who died 11 Mo. 18, 1714-15 is not the one who married 9, 4, 1714. He was witness to the marriage of Wm. Musgrave and Barbara Bevan, 10, 28, 1721. Don't know." (JQ - Gainer is an administrator of the will of the Abraham who dies 1714/5, which indicates that the one who marries in 1714 is same as the one who dies 2 months later.)

Letters of Administration on the estate of Abraham Musgrave of Haverford were granted 11 Mo. (Jan) 27, 1714. Administrators, Gainor Musgrave, William Lewis. Securities, Jonathan Cockshow, David Llewellyn. See Administrator's Docket, West Chester Pa. 1, p. 34.
